課程概述

第一週上課請各位同學 (已選上或欲加簽) 參與課程。聆聽課程介紹後,若想加簽可以留下來抽籤。
This course aims to help graduate students master the fundamentals of English writing for academic purposes. Since writing is, in simple terms, the behaviour of persuading others by presenting ideas, for each week's lesson, this course consists of two hours of lecture plus one hour of grammar practice and discussion. Topics which are to be covered include essential vocabulary in academic English, basic English sentence structures, and common rhetorical patterns for English paragraph/essay development.
Please note that this lesson will be taught mainly in Chinese language.

課程目標
By the end of the course, students will
1.understand common rhetoric modes in English writing.
2.apply their knowledge of English grammar for academic writing purposes.
3.demonstrate familiarities with vocabulary frequently used in academic discourse.
4.identify and edit their own sentence problems.
課程要求
1. Students are required to attend all classes. NO MORE THAN THREE excused absences are permitted. <第一堂課未到視同放棄>
2. Active participation in class discussions is required.
3. Quizzes and a comprehensive final exam are included in this course. NO make-up quizzes/exams will be allowed.
4. Writing assignments are carefully scheduled as stages toward the fulfillment of the course’s objectives. Late submissions will not be accepted.
5. Students are expected to preview and review the course content each week.
6. This course is NOT open to auditors.
預期每週課後學習時數
Students are recommended to spend around 2 hours per week to review the content or look for example texts featuring the topic of the week. As for the weeks with assignments, students may spend a total of 3 to 4 hours weekly on tasks including brainstorming, drafting, proofreading, and revising. Since improving writing requires both practice volume and frequency, all the numbers of hours above are merely an estimation, and the time spent on practicing should be distributed evenly into the days of a week.
